Study skills workshop

Join us from 10am to 11am

Writing complete and effective essays requires careful planning. This workshop, aimed at Access and Level 1 students, introduces the planning and writing process. We will discuss the structure and key components of an essay, and you’ll learn how to include these elements in your plan. Examples of plans will be showcased, and we’ll show you how to scope and order your material. You’ll also learn how to plan your paragraphs so that each one addresses a key element of your essay and builds towards a coherent argument.

All spaces for this workshop have been reserved but you can watch it on catch-up later.

After the event, you can watch the recording here (click on 'view previous recordings' button). The group work and plenary are not recorded. The slides for the event are available here 24h prior the event. .

Our Freshers events were created with the aim of welcoming new students and making them feel part of the OU academic community.

At these events we introduce some key people in the OU, we have sessions to explain how the OU delivers its distance learning - tours of module websites, sessions about the online library and assessment.

The event is not restricted to new students, we also have sessions on wellbeing whilst studying, time management and academic support which can serve as helpful reminders for student already studying with us.

Time management is the most common challenge for OU students, who are often juggling other responsibilities alongside their studies. In this workshop we’ll teach techniques and frameworks to help you plan your workload more effectively. You’ll also have an opportunity to discuss life and study hacks with fellow students in small groups.

Please note that this workshop is scheduled to start at 12:00pm and will last 60 minutes. The Adobe Connect Online Room is open 15 minutes prior to the start time. To attend this event, book your space here.

Learn how students learn at the OU! We'll show you around our virtual learning environment and take you through the important online resources you’ll have access to, to support you on your study journey. We will also show you how to use forums to connect with your tutor group and other students and briefly explain how to submit and receive your assignments. Your module study planner is a useful resource for planning your weekly workload; in small groups we will talk through how to put it to good use. As well as familiarising you with the systems and processes you will encounter during your study journey, this session will be an opportunity to meet other students.

Starting out with the OU is very exciting. Before the module officially begins, and you gain access to your learning materials and the OU systems, you may want to spend some time thinking about what lies ahead. At this event we’ll introduce you to some key people at the OU and offer advice about setting yourself up for the best start. These sessions are a great opportunity to meet other students who are also beginning the journey, to share your own tips and experiences, and to learn from other, more seasoned students.

Study skills workshop

These are the repeats of a workshop delivered earlier this year, aimed at students who may have missed it first time round.

Critical thinking is a key academic skill and involves evaluating different kinds of data and articulating how well they support an argument or are fit for purpose. The benefits of developing your critical thinking and writing skills include being able to show why you have referenced something and demonstrating a robust level of understanding. We’ll explain what tutors look out for as indicators of critical thinking, as well as obvious examples that this is not being done.

This session will be held online twice - from 12 to 1pm and from 7 to 8pm.

You can book your space on the 7pm Adobe Connect Online Room workshop here. All  spaces for the 12pm workshop have been reserved but you can sign up on the waitlist.

After the event, you can watch the recording here (click on 'view previous recordings' button). The group work and plenary are not recorded. The slides for the event are available here

No matter where you are on your academic journey, it is worth investing time in developing your writing style. Higher grades are often associated with clear and well-structured arguments, appropriate use of evidence and good communication skills. So at this event we focus specifically on enhancing your writing skills: in particular how to use an academic voice, conveying your understanding of the question, planning and structuring your work, and referencing.

This hour-long remote broadcast will start at 12pm and feature interviews with staff and students, tips and worksheets, and the opportunity to ask questions of our guests — and each other — in the live chat.

This session follows on from our essay planning and writing workshops, but it is not essential to have attended these. There’s nothing to prepare in advance, and you can choose whether or not to participate in the discussions.

Caring while studying can be challenging at the best of times and during Covid, student carers have been dealing with even more than usual. Some OU students may be new to caring due to Covid. This Carers Rights Day, 26 November, the Open University wants to recognise the tremendous work that carers do and showcase some of the support that’s available for our students.

The event is for anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental-health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.

During this live event we will respond to questions put forward by students to our panel of academics, advisors and student reps. We will also be launching our new Student Carer Policy and letting you know about new initiatives to support carers. There will be an opportunity to share your experiences of caring during lockdown and chat to other student carers.

Please book your free ticket here to attend this Adobe Connect Online Room workshop.
