Study skills workshop

Communicating in an academic environment takes some getting used to. We identify the unique traits of academic communication and offer tips to help you avoid misunderstandings. There will be a focus on online and distance communication, designed to help maximise your effectiveness when interacting with peers, tutors and others within the University.

Study skills workshop

A good academic writing style can demonstrate successful learning in higher education but isn't always thought of as a skill in its own right. We’ll outline the characteristics of good academic writing and explain how to develop your own approach. Get a tutor's take, as well as a student's viewpoint.

Time management is the most common challenge for OU students, who are often juggling other responsibilities alongside their studies. In this workshop we’ll teach techniques and frameworks to help you plan your workload more effectively. You’ll also have an opportunity to discuss life and study hacks with fellow students in small groups.

Study skills workshop

Learn how students learn at the OU! We'll show you around our virtual learning environment and take you through the important online resources you’ll have access to, to support you on your study journey. We will also show you how to use forums to connect with your tutor group and other students and briefly explain how to submit and receive your assignments. Your module study planner is a useful resource for planning your weekly workload; in small groups we will talk through how to put it to good use. As well as familiarising you with the systems and processes you will encounter during your study journey, this session will be an opportunity to meet other students.

Live broadcast

Our Student Hub Live induction event on 29 September is open to everyone but is particularly aimed at students who are just starting their studies within the OU’s Faculty of Business and Law (FBL).

During the live online event, we’ll introduce FBL before looking more closely at two modules (B100 and W101). We’ll also share advice on studying with us and provide an insight into apprenticeships. You’ll hear from a range of academics and students throughout five live sessions. In between these sessions we’ll broadcast short videos, created by tutors and students, offering tips and tricks for successful study. A dedicated social media desk will also be on call to answer your questions.  We hope you can join us online!

Welcome to The Open University (OU). This live, online and interactive event is a great opportunity to find out about us and meet other students.

Covid can’t keep us apart: you can log on remotely to view the event, chat with other students and take part in the sessions. We’ll outline some of the key things you will need to know about studying at the OU, introduce you to the online OU library and the OU Study App, and showcase how to keep digitally secure.

We also have sessions on what it’s like to be an OU student, how to manage your time and look after yourself in your studies, and how your tutors and student services can help you.

Whatever your level of study this (re)Freshers broadcast will help answer the question: “What I wish I’d known before starting to study STEM with the OU”.

Whether you are brand new to university study, returning to your studies after a break, transferring to the OU from another university or changing to a STEM qualification, this event will ensure you are as prepared as possible for your next module.

Join us on Wednesday 23rd September from 1pm till 4pm. We’ll showcase the equipment you might be using in our online OpenSTEM labs and talk to students, tutors, academics and the Student Support team.

Critical thinking is a key academic skill and involves evaluating information and articulating how well it explains a concept or is fit for purpose. The benefits of developing your critical thinking and writing skills include being able to show why you have referenced something and demonstrating a robust level of understanding.

We’ll explain some of the things tutors look for which evidence this, as well as some of the indicators that this is not being done.
