Frequently Asked Questions

Using Student Hub Live for the first time

The live chat is one of the ways you can join in with Student Hub Live events, meet fellow students and put questions to guests in the studio. You can access the live chat during an event by clicking the red ‘Watch Live Event’ button after signing in to the Student Hub Live website.

As with other chat tools, type your message in the text box below the chat box and press the ‘enter’ key to send your message.

When messages are added, the chat box will automatically scroll to show you the latest message. To pause the scrolling select the ‘pin’ button above the chat box, select the ‘pin’ button again to restart automatic scrolling.

We’ve got a fantastic live chat feature which means you can chat with other people watching and put your questions, thoughts and comments to the studio through our Hot Desk. The Hot Desk is in the studio and those on the Hot Desk join in with the live chat, putting your thoughts to our guests and providing information.

You can email us at studenthub@open.ac.uk and connect with us on Twitter @StudentHubLive.

There will be opportunities for you to come to the live studio to share your experience as a student, study tips or your interest in a topic. By signing up to the Student Hub Live website you can subscribe to our mailing list, we’ll send you emails about events and opportunities that may interest you.

We’d also love for you to send in a video about your OU journey, something you find interesting and want to share, or just about anything you think we should hear about! Find out more by emailing us at studenthub@open.ac.uk

To access Student Hub Live events just click the ‘sign in’ button where you can sign in or create an account. Your account lets you participate in Student Hub Live events, OpenLearn, sign up for Open University modules and much more! Once you have signed in, a red ‘Watch Live Event’ button will appear when an event is live.

The events should run on any modern web browser such as Internet Explorer 11, Chrome, Firefox or Safari. There is no need to download any special software, just click on the red ‘Watch Live Event’ button.

If you’re having trouble creating an account to sign in or having problems accessing a live event, you can alternatively watch the event on our Livestream page, https://livestream.com/ou-connections, although you will lose some of the interactive features. However, the Livestream chat is monitored so feel free to use it to put your thoughts, comments and questions to our guests live in the studio!

If you'd like to view the live video on your phone or tablet, you can find the Livestream app on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Student Hub Live events allow you to interact through the live chat, interactive widgets and by putting your thoughts, comments and questions to our guests in the studio. They are a fantastic way to meet fellow OU students, find out about the exciting things happening at your University and meet the academics that you may come across in your module materials, forums and audio & video resources.

We have lots of exciting events throughout the year about a variety of different topics. Just because Open University study is distance learning, doesn’t mean it has to feel distant. Student Hub Live events provide a great opportunity to meet fellow OU students, find out more about what’s happening at your University and engage with the academics you come across during your studies. Academics also love to hear from students, how they are getting on with their studies and what interests them. The Student Hub Live is intended to be a meeting place for the whole OU community!

Student Hub Live events are open to everyone – anyone can access the event and everyone is welcome – but it’s put on specifically for the Open University community, from students and academics to alumni and those interested in studying with the OU. So, please attend if you are new, or come along to share your experience and welcome others if you’re a current student. If you are not studying with the OU but are interested in what we are doing, you are also very welcome!

Some events cover quite specific areas, such as our Primary Studies Induction, but all of our events are open to the whole Open University community and will have sessions that may interest you. Feel free to view the event page for a programme of sessions that may interest you, use events as an opportunity to meet fellow students or find out more about a topic that interests you.

Technical questions

There are lots of options to adjust the screen settings including layout, screen size and widgets. Most web browsers will let you expand or reduce the size of any page by holding the ‘ctrl’ key and pressing the ‘+’ or ‘-’ key; to return to the original page size, hold down the ‘ctrl’ key and press the ‘0’ (zero) key. You can also use screen magnifiers, colour contrasts and screen readers.

If you are watching through our website through the ‘Watch Live Event’ button, there is a ‘change the layout’ button in the bottom right-hand corner of the page, pressing the button will switch between two layout options. Hovering over a button will display a tool tip.

To view the video in full screen select the ‘Full screen’ button that appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the video; to return to the standard layout on a computer press the escape (‘esc’) key.

If you’re having problems with the video, refreshing the page (hitting the reload button, pressing F5, or closing the page and opening it again) will usually sort out the problem. Switching the internet browser that you are using is also a common fix for most issues.

If you’re having persistent problems, you can email us for help at studenthub@open.ac.uk. We want to make sure you can join the event and we will try to help resolve problems that may be preventing you from taking part.

If you’re having problems signing in to our website, or persistent technical problems, you can alternatively watch the event through our Livestream page, although you will lose some interactive features. However, the Livestream chat is monitored, so feel free to use it to put your thoughts, comments and questions to our guests in the studio!

You can watch via your computer, laptop, games console, internet enabled TV, smartphone and tablet using a web browser. Most devices will already have the appropriate software installed to join a live event.
