In this session, three module chairs (Dr Neil Younger, Dr David Scott, and Dr Lee Curley) will discuss some of the Level 1 modules in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This session will serve as an introduction, highlighting how Level 1 modules are designed and taught to give you a broad understanding of topics and debates and to prepare you for future study.

The module chairs will discuss what it is like to be an Open University student and cover the importance of interdisciplinary teaching at Level 1; how this level prepares you for future study at the OU; and how module content is designed to be relevant to modern issues and debates (for example ‘From Covid-19 to Black Lives Matter: What is Criminology at the Open University?’). We look forward to having you join our chat.

He will discuss tricks and tips on how to make the most of your studies and what you can do to help you feel a little less isolated while you study from home.

Time management is a key study skill and something most of us would like to improve at! For this session we’ll ask academics from the faculty to share their tips and advice. Professional writers Sally O’Reilly and Ed Hogan will discuss how they manage conflicting deadlines and priorities, and Director of Teaching for Psychology and Counselling, Rachel Penny, will speak about managing intense full-time study.

All of the qualifications and modules you study are linked to particular schools and faculties depending on the subject area. In FASS we have three schools: Arts and Humanities, Social Science and Global Studies, and Psychology and Counselling. In this session Matt Staples, Richard Marsden, and Rachel Penny will chat about the different schools they are part of, Matt’s role as Director of Teaching, and some of the ways we work to improve the student experience across modules and qualifications.

If I have a problem or concern who do I ask for help? This session will explain the various forms of support that are available to you and how to access them. We will discuss the roles of your tutor and their line manager, as well as the staff in the Student Support Team, and outline the online resources you can access, so that no matter what your difficulty or question is, you will know where and to whom you can turn for support.

In this session we talk to representatives from around the nations to find out what’s different and special about studying in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
