Robert Samuels

Dr Robert Samuels is a Senior Lecturer in the Music Department of the Arts Faculty.

He has organised a “Literature and Music” research group for many years wuth Dr Delia da Sousa Correa of the English Department. They are both members of the International Words and Music Association, and ran its international conference in London in 2013.

Robert’s writings are mostly about nineteenth and twentieth-century music. He is currently finishing a book on the connections between nineteenth-century symphonies and nineteenth-century novels.

Robert has taught for The Open University for more than twenty years, and for many years was one of the Course Directors of the Music Summer School held in Durham. He has written bits of all the modules offered in Music since 1998.

Robert lives in Oxford with his family, and like one of his musical heroes, Robert Schumann, enjoys playing chess. He is proud to be currently ranked round about the 5,500th best player in country.
