John Allen

John Allen is Professor of Economic Geography in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He has taught at The Open University for nearly 40 years and has a long-standing commitment to both introductory and interdisciplinary modules in social sciences. He believes strongly in the dynamic between research and teaching and has practised that in over 15 modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including DD102 where his research interests in power and space translated into asking questions about the power of the Big 4 supermarkets in the UK. A more recent translation of John’s is to be found in DD213 (a new course this year on environment and society), in which his research focus is on factory farms and food-borne diseases, and looking at how life can be made safe in such environments. The module explores whether factory farmed chickens pose a risk for the amplification and spread of disease to humans. For the record, John still eats chicken and has even thought about keeping them in his back garden, much as his grandparents did.
