Study skills workshop

This hour-long online workshop is aimed at new starters who may not yet be up to speed with their studies. We’ll help you identify what to get stuck into first, and discuss what support is available to you and how to make the most of it. We’ll cover time management techniques and how to identify SMART objectives so that you can stay on top of your studies when life gets in the way. This practical session will give students at any level tools for getting back on track and offer an opportunity to chat with other OU students. The room opens 15 minutes before the session starts.

Communicating online may be very familiar to many people but effective online communication is something that often needs work. What might be appropriate and understood in social media settings is unlikely to be appropriate in an academic setting. In this workshop we’ll look at some of the key skills involved in using online information for a purpose and how to communicate in a way that fits the need and shows your understanding.

Live broadcast

This live, online and interactive event is a fun way to find out about the OU and meet other students. Featuring both daytime and evening sessions, log in from the comfort of your own home — or coffee shop — to view the event, chat with other students and participate in our studio panel’s discussions.

We’ll talk you through learning with the OU, share study hacks from other students, and offer tips for fitting coursework into your busy life. Hear from some of our academics, who will share practical advice on topics including time management, delegation and the complexities of juggling study with other responsibilities like being a carer.

Learn about the services and groups available to support you in your studies and, of course, get the real lowdown by chatting with other students. We hope you can drop in!

Study skills workshop

A great source of support for students starting in February 2020, the “OU Essentials Programme” has three one-hour online workshops, each designed to help you kick-start your module.

Writing academically demonstrates successful learning in higher education but it isn't always thought of as a skill in its own right. In this interactive SHL session we will look at some of the key features of academic writing and explain how you can develop your academic writing skills. We'll give a tutor's impression of what constitutes good communication as well as a student's viewpoint on how to achieve this.

Please note that this workshop is scheduled to start at 14:00 and will last 60 minutes. You will need to book a free ticket to attend this Adobe Connect Online Room event. You can book your free ticket here.

This workshop introduces you to study at the OU. You'll get an idea about how students learn at the OU; we'll show you around a virtual learning environment and highlight the important online resources you will need. We will also show you how to use forums to connect with your tutor group and other students and briefly explain how to submit and receive your assignments. Your module's study planner is a useful resource for helping to plan your workload each week, and in small groups we will talk about how to use the materials available on your module to fit your study into your week. As well as helping you become familiar with the systems and processes you will need as an OU student, this session will be an opportunity to meet other students.

Study skills workshop

Critical thinking is a key skill in higher education and involves evaluating and weighing up information as well as considering how well it explains a concept or is fit for purpose. Developing your critical thinking and writing skills is beneficial as you’ll be able to show  why you have included something and demonstrate a good level of understanding. We’ll explain some of the things that tutors look for to demonstrate understanding and critical thinking, as well as some of the indicators that this is not being done.

This session will be held online twice. Please note that you will need to book a free ticket to attend this Adobe Connect Online Room event. Tickets for the morning session from 11:00 to 12:00 are available here and for the evening session from 19:00 to 20:00 are available here.
