Live broadcast

Event date : 7th July 2021

Duration : 4h 30m

Recommended level : 123Post Graduate

Organised by : Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

Programme

10:30

On Wednesday, 7th July join Student Hub Live for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics showcase! Professor Nick Braithwaite, Executive Dean of the STEM Faculty, will kick things off at 10:30. The STEM Faculty is releasing lots of new curricula; from Geology and Cybersecurity to Artificial Intelligence and revamped Maths modules, there is a STEM subject for everyone! You will also get to meet STEM PhD students and hear about their ground-breaking research. Finally, you will hear about the support that is available for students; Student Support will show how their team can and will support you throughout your studies, the Careers and Employability team will be on hand to show you how to navigate the Opportunity Hub, and the multitude of support they offer, and finally, hear about the practical laboratory skills you’ll learn when you study STEM with the OU and use the OpenSTEM labs. There is a session (or two!) for everyone!

Want to put your study to use to change your life but don’t know how? Then join the OU’s Careers and Employability Services team on Student Hub Live and discover pathways that match your passions, values and skills. We’ll tell you about our interactive online tools, employer insight days, webinars, podcasts, forums and downloadable guides. Perhaps you know where you want to be – but don’t know how to get there? We’ll help you explore what’s out there using OpportunityHub – your gateway to jobs, internships, employer connections and professional events.

The Maths Education Team have been incredibly busy over the past couple of years writing two new modules: Learning and Doing Geometry and Learning and Doing Algebra. These modules, along with Mathematical Thinking in Schools, help students understand the principles and differences in how people learn, how to encourage geometric and algebraic thinking and the difficulties learners of mathematics come across – either at school or beyond!

Tom will introduce our brand new, single honours geology degree, highlighting opportunities for practical work and outlining the modules you can study at the different stages. On this course you can explore the Earth’s history through clues in rocks, minerals and fossils and branch out to study a broad array of Earth, environmental and planetary science issues.

The Computing and IT curriculum is regularly updated with new modules, new qualifications and changes to the content in existing modules. The most recent major developments are the introduction of three new qualifications. John will provide an overview of the curriculum, including the new qualifications in Computing with Electronic Engineering and the undergraduate and postgraduate cyber security ones. Allan will then explain how TM335 is kept topically up to date with the addition of module material around 5G, broadband and optical fibre.

In this session we will explore how the OpenSTEM Labs help you learn practical lab skills remotely. The OpenSTEM Labs are used by students across the STEM Faculty so we have activities in physics, biology, chemistry, health sciences and computing and are adding new activities all the time. In this session we will also be looking specifically at the engineering courses and how the OpenSTEM Labs can help those students earn practical lab skills.
