Stephen Akpabio-Klementowski

Stephen Akpabio-Klementowski (AFHEA) is an associate lecturer in criminology with The Open University (OU), a regional manager for the OU’s Student’s in Secure Environments (SiSE) team, and a PhD candidate with a focus on higher education in prisons. Before going to university, Stephen, who left school at age 15 without achieving any formal qualifications went to prison. This is where he was introduced to The Open University.

During an 8-year period of incarceration, Stephen gained an undergraduate and two postgraduate degrees before embarking on a PhD programme in criminology following his release in 2010. Stephen currently works with over 60 prisons to facilitate OU study as a regional manager for The Open University’s Students in Secure Environments (SISE) team whilst tutoring 1^st and 2^nd year criminology students as an associate lecturer and conducting research in prisons as part of his doctoral degree.
