Until 1993, most products in the Western world were created for white, healthy, right handed, adult males. This fact has stayed with me throughout my design practice career. Thereby after nearly twenty years as a design practitioner / academic, experience has allowed me to be continually inspired by the ‘design for all’ concept. Inclusive, universal, and collaborative design are all variations of a theme in design which instigates working with the user throughout the design development ‘story’.

Having worked with NHS – clinical, mental health, well-being charities, blind and visually impaired charities, and offender learners, I have developed a wide amount of ability-need issues. These issues have led me to a passion for solving an individual’s needs with the individual or a group of individuals. From creating and designing wheel chair user adaptable clothing, to currently working with haptic robotics, the desire to problem solve ethically and inclusively is still as strong as ever.

The need to reflect with in my practice either with a client, or via materials-led iterative process, or even my own reflections of practice, have been prevalent throughout my version of the design cycle. Reflection almost asks the learner/practitioner to pause their fluid learning, hold on to the learning they have and work through varied cycles of reflective practice to ascertain deeper learning that has been shown to be more retainable than many other processes of learning technique.
