Jill McLachlan

Dr Jill McLachlan is a passionate education advocate, drawing on her work as a primary school teacher to inform her multiple roles at the Open University.

Jill started at the university as a mature student in 2000, achieving her MEd and then her EdD (and she is still studying now!). She became an Associate Lecturer in 2008, using her own experiences as a distance learner and teacher to support other OU students, especially those training to become Teaching Assistants.

Jill has worked extensively within the Primary Education Foundation Degree and BA Primary Degree pathways. She is currently co-chair of module E207 Subject knowledge and professional practice in primary schools, and works as an Associate Lecturer on E102 Introduction to child psychology and childhood studies, E103 Learning and Teaching in the Primary Years and E209 Developing Subject Knowledge for the Primary Years. Jill has also co-written and presented the MOOC ‘Childhood in the digital age’.

Having tutored across many modules and study levels, Jill was asked to take on the role of Academic Progress Tutor last year to support new students studying 120 points at level 1. She was able to advise on pinch points, study habits and how/when to seek support to stay on track.

Jill says: ‘the key to success is for students to recognise they are all on their own journey, each having different starting points, speeds, needs and obstacles. It’s not how you achieve your goal that counts, it’s that you achieve it in the end.’
