Jan Haywood

Jan Haywood completed her PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2013, before teaching Classics and Ancient History at the University of Liverpool and the University of Leicester. She joined the Open University as a Lecturer in Classical Studies in January 2017. Her research focuses on Greek historiography and its literary contexts, and she’s particularly interested in the early historian Herodotus, who engages with many other textual sources, from the poet Stesichorus to the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus. Her research interests also include Greek drama, especially tragedy, notably the way that tragedians interact with and shape wider social-political discourses.

Jan has recently completed a monograph that explores the influence of Homer’s Iliad in a number of contexts, including the tragic play Trojan Women by Euripides (415 BCE). She is passionate about opening up higher education, especially the study of the classical world, to wider audiences, and  enjoys working at the Open University.
