Welcome to the Open University! The UK’s largest distance learning university. With a hundred and seventy four thousand students, you are part of a huge community. In this session we think about what belonging to that community means, and how, with the rapid advances in technology, being a student looks very different than it did 20 years ago. The Vice Chancellor, Lead Architect and Director of Library Services explain how they work to ensure that distance learning is an important part of the political, social and digital landscape both now and in the future.

Peter Horrocks took up the post of the sixth Vice-Chancellor of The Open University in May 2015.

As Vice-Chancellor, Peter is the chief academic and administrative officer of the University, responsible for providing strategic leadership through his senior executive team, championing the interests of the institution at the highest levels with government, policy makers and funders, and ensuring the long term financial and operational sustainability of the OU.

Rosie has worked in academic libraries since 2001, taking a particular interest in information literacy, digital capabilities, and games and learning. Her previous experience includes project managing the development and implementation of the award winning Alan Gilbert Learning Commons at th
