Presentation time: Monday, 22 January, 2018 - 14:00

Ellen Heeley and Claire Rostron are both OU academics, tutors and academic conduct officers in the STEM faculty. They will discuss why it’s important to write in your own words to show your own understanding when completing your OU assignments. They’ve spent a lot of time working on possible plagiarism cases on STEM modules, investigating how the cases have arisen, and trying to work with the students involved to ensure they can work with academic integrity as they move forward in their studies. Very often there is a good deal of misunderstanding on the part of students of what markers want to see in assignments, and what constitutes good academic practice. So, the session will clarify this and give some tips on how to approach writing in your own words at all stages of assignment preparation. This includes the note taking stage, as well as the final writing stage.
